CAD to BIM Modeling with Clash Detection and Coordination for a UK-based Commercial Project

Brief Overview

The implementation of 3D BIM modeling with clash detection and coordination was undertaken for a G+18-story commercial building, situated on Braham Street in London. This project was commissioned by the Greater London Authority, specifically the Mayor of London. The main goal was to create a LOD300 BIM model for the Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection (MEPF) services and ensure design validation prior to the commencement of construction.

Challenges/Requirements

LOD300 BIM Model

The project required the creation of a detailed LOD300 BIM model for the MEPF services, which involved capturing accurate geometric and parametric information about the building's systems and components.

Clash Detection

Clash detection was essential to identify potential clashes or conflicts between different building systems, such as mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection. Resolving disagreements early on helped avoid costly rework during construction.

Coordination

Coordinating the various disciplines and trades involved in the project, including MEPF contractors, architects, and structural engineers, was crucial to ensure the seamless integration of systems and maximizing efficiency during construction.

Deliverables

 A comprehensive BIM model was created, capturing accurate and detailed information on the MEPF systems. This included components such as HVAC equipment, electrical panels, pipes, conduits, fixtures, and fire protection devices.

The BIM model was subjected to clash detection analysis to identify clashes or conflicts between different building systems. Clash reports were generated, highlighting the clashes for further resolution. Coordination meetings were conducted to discuss and resolve clashes among the project stakeholders.
